I can't believe the season is almost over and we are already starting our second week of the Haunt. Make sure you check out our web site at www.haunt.canadaswonderland.com/ and if you can find the link to the Mortal meal you can get in early and enjoy a great meal plus early access to 2 of our great mazes!
I would have to say we have had a good season in Food and Beverage this year, lots of positive comments, great staff and lots of funnel cakes, foot long hot dogs and many other meals served to a lot of happy park visitors. The best part of the season so far has been the amount of staff that have really improved our food service and helped to build our department into a strong team that is able to serve some of the best park food out there. So as we go into a season like the Haunt we can try out new items, improve on old items and start building a better team for next year.
One of the newest items we have in the park combines what is best about camping and brings back fun memories to many kids growing up, so it is a perfect fit for the park. so look for the new S'mores cart in the Behemoth Plaza, where you can enjoy a graham cookie with warm marshmallow and chocolate oozing out as you bite into them. This has been a big hit so far and I tell you it is a lot better than fried butter! The cookie is something I made using 3 different recipes found on the net, then combined it with our current chocolate chip cookie to ensure it would be stable, then tried out 12 different versions of it to be sure it would work. Once the recipe was down pat the ladies in our commissary have been playing with the cookie machine to make sure we have the right size, the right consistency and then they are baked perfectly in our huge ovens. So much work for something so good. Once the cookie was perfected we needed to be sure we had the right filling for the cookie, this proved a little difficult since we don't have a campfire to roast marshmallows over. We came up with an idea to fill the cookie with a warm marshmallow sauce, then we created a chocolate disc studded with mini marshmallows, the cookies are slightly warmed and once put together mmmmmmmmmmmmm. I had way to many samples to make sure this was just right for the park and I love them!
The other addition we have that has been a big hit is a fresh hand dipped corn dog, not your typical corn dog you get at a fair, or buy at the store. This corn dog grew out of a visit to the Ex this summer and talk of the foods we love to eat once in a while. Turns out I am not the only person that loves corn dogs! So when it came time to try something new it was like lets try this, you know when you go out and eat something great at a restaurant and you want to try to make that at home, well this was one of those times I had no idea how to make a corn dog, what type of batter to use, do we need a machine specially made to fry them in, lots of questions. But luckily I am a professional and I can eat a lot of samples before I get it right.....did I mention I love corn dogs! I tried a few batters, I even ordered the product from a company that sells a corn dog batter. But I though I would ask a friend that works in the States if she had a recipe for corn dogs (you know Americans they love anything fried on a stick) I finally got the recipe from my friend and it turned out to be easy, the hardest part is getting the right consistency of the batter. The taste was just right, a little sweet, a little crunchy and oh so delicious. Lucky we have a great hot dog here, but don't look for the foot long dogs to be dipped and fried, we are using the 7 inch version.
So this picture is of John enjoying the second attempt of this final recipe, it was so good he had to have 2 samples.
We are currently serving this at Roadside Cafe, but will be adding it to Thrill burger this weekend so guests will be able to buy it during the Haunt as well. If you have ever had a corn dog you know how good they are, but when they are freshly made and hand dipped they are so much better!
Now one of the items we brought back from last year was so popular we had to bring it back earlier. the Apple Cinnamon Crumble Funnel Cake, a tasty fall addition that people were asking for all season.
The funnel cake is the same as one you get with strawberry topping, but once you have a warm funnel cake with apple cinnamon topping and crunchy crumble topping you know it is apple harvest time in Ontario! This funnel cake is available at all 3 locations Fightertown, Medieval Faire and International Street.
So now that we have new food additions and open until midnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday I know you are going to come by and get a snack to enjoy while you get scared in the mazes, so see you in the park and have a great time.
